Cat scratch disease, also known as bacillary angiomatosis, is an infection caused by an organism with the name Bartonella. Bartonella is often carried in the saliva of cats. The disease is carried from the saliva of the cat, to thier paws, and into your body when they scratch you. Cat scratch disease most often affects the skin and lymph nodes, but can also involve the internal organs. It is uncommon in cold climates, but prevalent in warm, humid places. Domestic cats have been identified as the source of the infection that causes cat scratch disease in many cases.
