HOW CAN IT BE PREVENTED?

Persons with HIV disease who choose to have a cat as a pet should adopt or purchase an older animal in good health, as younger cats are thought more likely to have the Bartonella infection.  However, since the organism that causes cat scratch disease is widespread in the environment, it is difficult to avoid exposure completely.
